‘Cosplay’ has grown wildly in popularity in recent years. Comic cons all around the world allow geeks not only come together to celebrate their love of their favorite characters but to dress up as them too. However, not all cosplays are created equally.
For the uninitiated, cosplaying basically means dressing up as a well-known fictional character – it could be a character from a movie, a book, or a video game. However, this is not like when we lazily dress as The Crow on Halloween – no, cosplay artists really commit to their outfits, and often spend months working on them.
It can also be a lucrative business opportunity, with many cosplayers generating thousands of dollars in revenue each month through crowdfunding sites like Patreon. Yup – some people do this full-time, and make a good living doing so!
One of these people is Australian cosplayer Nicha, who goes by the name Nichameleon on Instagram.
Nicha’s Instagram name is a reference to the fact that she’s a chameleon when it comes to dressing up as her favorite characters. Her ability to transform herself into near-perfect replicas of these characters has earned her over 100,000 followers on the photo-sharing app. When you see the results of her efforts, it’s not hard to see why she’s become so popular.
So, without further ado, here are 16 of her most impressive cosplays…
1. Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins
Right off the bat, this one is incredibly accurate. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the most complicated outfit to pull off. However, when you look this much like Jennifer Lawrence already, you needn’t put too much work in.
2. Violet Parr from The Incredibles
Well, this certainly puts a lewd spin on the character. As I’m sure you’ve noticed (particularly the guys reading), this outfit is literally painted on, which will have taken a great amount of effort and patience.
3. Mera from DC Comics’ Aquaman
Here’s another skin-tight outfit – I honestly can’t tell whether this is garment-based, or painted, or a mixture of both. Either way, it looks great.
5. Yoko Littner from the manga and anime series Gurren Lagan
I must say, I’m not familiar with this series, but… wow.
6. Danaerys Targaryen Cosplay from Game of Thrones
Nicha trying her hand at a cosplay of one of the most popular characters on TV, and smashing it out of the park.
7. Mystique from X Men
Another example of Nicha’s bodypainting skills. I guess she didn’t have any choice with this particular character.
8. Jinx ‘The Loose Canon’ Cosplay from D.C. comics’ League of Legends
To the boys reading this article – have your brains exploded by now?
9. Belle from Beauty and the Beast
This is a nice wholesome cosplay. I’m glad she didn’t try to sexy this one up.
10. Samus Aran from Metroid, the science-fiction action-adventure game series by Nintendo
This is a very niche cosplay, but she pulls it off very well.
11. Jessie from Pokémon‘s Team Rocket
Team Rocket were the villains of the Pokemon series, and Nicha has done a great job of capturing the essence of their female leader.
12. Zubat Pokémon
Nicha created this epic Pokémon cosplay at the height of the Pokémon GO craze in 2016. Zubat is one of the most common Pokemon found in the game, but they don’t look quite like this!
To help fund her creations, Nicha has a Patreon account where people can support her cosplays.
“The ultimate dream would be not having to work two jobs to fund my cosplay obsession and do cosplay full time?!” she wrote. “BUT I know that is a HUGE very very unlikely goal so, in the meantime, I am just doing my goddamn best guys!”
13. Harley Quinn from the Batman series
A lot of women have tried to dress up as Harley Quinn, particularly on the Halloween after the Suicide Squad movie, but few have done it this well.
14. Nidalee from Legend of Legends
The cosplay is great, but I can’t imagine she was too comfortable sitting in those weeds. The price we pay for looking good, huh?
15. Black Widow from Marvel Comics
The Black Widow franchise is crying out for a movie to be made, and hopefully we will see one within the next few years. In the meantime, there’s always Nicha’s epic cosplay.
16. Cammy from Street Fighter
Wow. I don’t think we need any more words for this one, do we?
Nicha is a self-described geek, but it’s fair to say that she doesn’t look like your typical comic book fan. It’s not hard to see why she earns a good living doing what she loves! More power to her.
