When you think of McDonald’s, the thing that springs to mind is far from fine dining. You’re going to be thinking of cheap, easy fast food served to you by teenagers who look like they’d rather be out with their friends than serving you fries. And you’re going to be thinking of a delicious Big Mac or a big box of chicken nuggets that you know are terrible for your diet, but who cares? Sometimes, you just need your fast food fix and McDonald’s is the place to get it!
Even if you’re not a fan of McDonald’s, chances are you could spot one from a mile away. They’re all in similar looking buildings, with the golden arches that are visible for miles around, even if you ignore all of the billboards pointing you their way. On the inside you’ve got your counters, your booths, your tables with simple stools, it’s all the same everywhere you go. Well, almost everywhere you go. There’s one McDonald’s that breaks the mould in the best possible way and today, we’re going to be taking a look inside this unusual fast food restaurant.
We’re talking about the Freeport McDonald’s in Maine, which is also known as the Gore House McDonald’s. It’s named this because it was built into a mansion that was once owned by a prominent merchant in Freeport, named William Gore. But turning Gore House into a McDonald’s was more difficult for the multinational chain than you might have thought. Here’s a shot of the outside of this one of a kind McDonald’s.
When McDonald’s wanted to build a new restaurant in Freeport, some of the members of the town weren’t exactly happy about the prospect of the iconic golden arches dominating the landscape of the town. With this in mind, McDonald’s reached an agreement with the town that said they could transform Gore House into a fast food restaurant if the building was in keeping with the signature look of the little town. This was back in 1984 and the McDonald’s in Freeport is the still the same today.
Back in 1984 Stephen Leroy, the manager of McDonald’s’ media team made a statement about the Gore House McDonald’s. It said, “What we are doing there is something we probably have never done before in terms of design and the amount of time and effort involved. We are willing to spend the money to make it compatible with the area, the history, the community and the people who live there.” And looking at photos of the restaurant that have been shared online, we can see that McDonald’s definitely kept their word! Here’s a shot of the dining room, which is unlike any other McDonald’s in the world!
As you can see, the booths, plastic tables, and stools you expect to see in every McDonald’s you visit aren’t present in Gore House. Instead, guests are greeted by wooden chairs, dining tables and candles. There are potted plants in the corner and blinds over the bay windows, making this entire place look a lot fancier than any McDonald’s we’ve ever been in! However, some things are still the same. As you can see below, you can still get your sauces and drinks at the dispensers at the counter, and there are high chairs available for your little ones. It might be fancy, but it’s still a McDonald’s after all!
It’s not just the building and interior of this McDonald’s that’s extra fancy though, the Freeport McDonald’s has an item on it’s menu that is just as fancy as the restaurant itself. If you go up to the counter at this McDonald’s you’ll be able to order a Lobster Roll that might just be your new favourite food, putting your average Big Macs and chicken nuggets to shame! Here’s an Instagram post from someone who had the privilege of ordering this super fancy dish.
As you can see, this McDonald’s is unlike any other you’ll ever go to, and personally, we’d love to take a visit! Is anyone else craving a McDonald’s burger right now? Me too. Let’s hit up the drive-thru before we get too hungry!
What do you think of this fancy McDonald’s and their equally fancy menu item? Would you want to eat at this McDonald’s or would you rather just go to a regular drive-thru? Would you want to eat a McDonald’s lobster roll or would you rather stick with a Big Mac?
