The Melbourne photographer whose honest images regularly go viral for their honest depictions of childbirth and motherhood.
And as 2017 came to an end, she decided to reveal her 2017 roundup of her best pictures.
The 30-year-old photographer has received global acclaim for her images of mothers in labor with their newborns. Honestly, when I first looked at the photos I could almost feel the mother’s pain and joy.
In some of her photographs, you can see the pain, joy, and energy that goes into giving birth. The images challenge the way we think of childbirth, and how we see it in the media. She says she wants parents to be wholly immersed in the birthing experience.
“Dads should be helping the mum relax, not holding the camera”.
In one picture, a dad is seen in the birthing pool with the mother of his child while he gives her some water to drink.
Lacey has also produced a number of photos that tackling misconceptions and stigma around breastfeeding, postnatal depression, as well as touchy subjects like stillbirth.
In this photo, you see a mother and her child in the birthing room as the daughter gives birth.
Again, it just goes to show just how important our mothers really are.
Quite often when a mother is giving birth, one of the most supportive figures in the delivery room is their mother.
Not only have they gone through this process themselves, but they also know exactly the right thing to say in this situation.
More recently, Lacey has started her own campaign #humansuncensored.
The campaign hopes to desexualize human bodies for both men and women.
She termed the precious moments between a new mom and her newborn child as ‘beautiful chaos’ and has even labeled her work as ‘unapologetically raw’.
But it doesn’t just end there for the activist. She also maintains an ongoing relationship with the families she shoots, because she believes she has a shared such a sacred space with them.
