Well, here’s more to it than meets the eye. It turns out these preferences are directly linked to evolution theory.
“Although most people will not be surprised that extreme thinness was perceived as the most attractive body type – since this prevails so heavily in media, culture, and fashion – the important advance is that now we have an evolutionary understanding of why this is the case.”
It all comes down to being healthy and fit.
At first glances, thin women are considered to be healthy and fitter than their curvier counterparts.
But it also means a smoother reproductive mechanism along with better knowledge when it comes to survival..
This explains why women with higher BMI were ranked lower in the study.
Researcher John Speakman said:
“Fitness in evolutionary terms comprises two things: survival and the ability to reproduce. What we wanted to investigate was the idea that when we look at someone and think they are physically attractive, are we actually making that assessment based on a hard-wired evolutionary understanding of their potential for future survival and reproductive ability?”
But thankfully, it’s not all bad news!
The research team stated that different cultures across the world have a different perception of beauty and attractiveness that could have affected their ideal body type choice.
Despite petite women scoring top marks in this particular study, there are other studies that prove the opposite.
A study done in 2011 stands in total contradiction to the former study’s conclusions.
This study found out that men were more attracted to women with hourglass-shape and curvy women, rather than a petite woman.
But with all that said and done, there still are a number of studies that contradict and imply another’s viewpoints and findings.
But you should always keep in mind that there are no body shape shops. We all have different body shapes and we should learn not to be ashamed of who we are and what we look like.
If you want to improve how you look then all power to you. Just make sure it’s for the right reasons.
Each body shape is unique and beautiful in their own way.
