Joe Pesci is a Hollywood icon with huge hit movies under his belt. He starred in the likes of Goodfellas, My Cousin Vinnie, Lethal Weapon, and (my personal favourite) Home Alone. There was a time when you couldn’t enter a movie theatre without knowing one of his movies was showing, but nowadays he’s been conspicuously absent from our screens for a long time. So what happened to Joe Pesci and why don’t we see him any more? We’ve found the reasons and put them all together right here.
1. Firstly, he retired from acting
This is by far the simplest answer but it doesn’t come close to covering it all. Pesci retired in 1999 to pursue a music career. He’d been a guitarist for The Starliters in the 60’s before being replaced by none other than Jimi Hendrix, so he had a solid background in the music industry and had released his first solo album in 1986.
2. He almost got married
In 2000 Pesci started dating Angie Everhart and he proposed to her in 2007. Unfortunately, the engagement didn’t last and the couple split in 2008.
3. Nowadays, he only acts for his friends
One member of Pesci’s exclusive friends list is Robert De Niro, who starred with Joe in blockbusters such as Goodfellas, Once Upon A Time In America, and Raging Bull.
4. He got bored of acting
No matter how much you love your job, it’s not unusual to get a bit bored with it sometimes and Joe Pesci is no exception to this rule. In 1992 he said, “I love to star in movies, but I want to have good roles. It doesn’t help to get starring roles in something that’s no good. I mean, that will just kill you.” Deciding he couldn’t compete with his earlier successes, Pesci decided to end his career on a high.
5. It’s a harsh industry
At one point in his career, Joe gained 30 pounds in order to play a starring role in a movie alongside John Travolta. He then discovered he’d been relegated to a smaller role with a lower salary, Pesci ended up filing a $3 million lawsuit and the movie, which would have centred around John Gotti and his Gambino crime family, was never produced. We wouldn’t want to go through all that either!
6. There were legal difficulties involving his ex wife and a hitman
Pesci’s ex-wife, Claudia Haro, married stuntman Garrett Warren, but things did not end well. Warren was shot at his front door and police discovered that Haro had hired a hitman to kill him. Pesci showed up to her courtroom every day during the trial and there were rumours that Joe was the one who had paid for the expensive hit. However, it was proved that he was entirely unrelated to the crime.
7. But there’s still hope he’ll change his mind
In 2016, Robert De Niro spoke out about a movie project that he’s had on hold for years now, with Martin Scorsese billed to direct. The movie is called The Irishman and has been on hold for so long because they’re desperate for Pesci to stat alongside De Niro. However, De Niro commented about the choice words Pesci had about the project, “So far all he keeps saying is ‘go f*** yourself.’” Charming! But it looks like De Niro has finally changed Pesci’s mind as the movie is reported to possibly be in filming. We might see Pesci again soon after all!
