The 27-year-old singer-songwriter sent the internet into frenzy in January, when he revealed he proposed to Cherry – who he first met at Thomas Mills high school in England – over New Years.
He shared the news with his millions of Instagram followers by posting a picture of the pair lovingly embracing to his account along with the caption: “Got myself a fiancé just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx”
The ‘Shape Of You’ hitmaker – who won the Global Success Award at this year’s BRITs for his contribution to music – is popular with female fans after penning romantic songs with heartfelt lyrics, such as ‘Perfect’, ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and ‘Galway Girl’, which are often chosen as wedding songs.
However, Ed has revealed that he won’t be singing his own love ballads to his soon-to-be wife at their nuptials when they eventually marry, because he finds the whole idea “weird”.
Speaking on Australia’s ‘The Kyle and Jackie O Show’ whilst on tour Down Under, he was asked if he was planning to perform one of his songs at his wedding. Dismissing the thought, he said: “It would be a little bit weird.”
Another wedding the singer won’t be performing at will be Prince Harry and actress Megan Markle’s upcoming ceremony on May 19.
When asked if he’d like to sing for the couple at Windsor Castle, Ed had said: “Yeah, why not.”
But he later commented how he will be on tour when the two tie the knot, so wouldn’t be able to perform even if he was invited to.
He told the Daily Express newspaper: “They said, ‘If you were asked, would you say yes?’ And I was like, ‘Of course’.
“But journalists, like, everyone’s like, ‘Oh, he’s playing it!’
“But no one’s looked at my tour dates. I’m in Ireland, I can’t do it, I haven’t been asked either.”
Ed created confusion when he was seen wearing a silver ring on his wedding finger that seemed to suggest the singer and his fiancé got hitched in secret.
However, he quickly denied having tied the knot already and suggested that the reason behind his choice to wear an engagement ring was much more sentimental.
Speaking on the BRITs red carpet, Ed revealed that Cherry made the ring for him, and he chooses to wear it as a symbol of his commitment to her.
He explained: “We didn’t get secretly married, no, she made me this ring out of silver clay, so we were both kinda wearing rings.”
Putting to bed speculation the couple had secretly married, he said: “I never saw why men didn’t wear engagement rings.
“It’s the same commitment either way.
“Cherry made it for me herself out of silver clay. I really like it.”
He then went on to joke that the ring served another unconventional benefit for the singer by adding: “It also means that nobody will know when we have got married.”
Despite being one of the most famous music stars in the world, Ed revealed that he would happily trade a glitzy, star-studded party for a night in with Cherry.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper about his plans to head straight home after the BRIT Awards ended, he said: “Usually at the BRITs I walk into the party and think, ‘I wish I’d just gone home and had a curry’.
“So tonight, that’s what I am doing.”
So far, the pair have remained tight-lipped about their future ceremony, and no details have been officially confirmed. However, it has been speculated that the couple could exchange their vows at Ed’s home in Suffolk, England – the area Ed and Cherry grew up in – as he has reportedly asked for a chapel to be installed in the grounds.
A source said recently: “Even though Ed is one of the world’s biggest stars he does like to do things privately, like his engagement.
“Having his wedding on his own land would mean they could celebrate their big day with just their nearest and dearest and then head back to the main house of a big party after.”
Cherry’s father, Matthew Seaborn, is an architect and has lodged the planning application on the grounds of Ed’s lavish property, adding to the list of features on the site which already include an indoor swimming pool, a ‘man cave’ and even a tree house in the garden.
The East Suffolk Council are expected to have made a decision on whether the chapel will be built by April this year, which would mean that if all goes to plan, the happy couple could be married as early as this summer if they wanted.
It is not known whether the pair will live in Sufolk or move to another location together once they become husband and wife, but Ed admitted that his future marriage has made him think more about the household items the couple will have in their married home.
He said recently: “I find myself getting really excited about kitchen appliances now.”
Despite remaining tight-lipped over the wedding preparations, the star joked that he would be up for hosting his bachelor party celebrations in one of England’s Wetherspoon pubs.
Speaking to KISS FM, he explained his large party of famous friends and family would mean the star will most likely host a couple of parties to cater for everyone, but joked he isn’t going to be splashing the cash for the occasion.
He said: “No Vegas! I kind of just want to go up north.
“Rent one of those Wetherspoons hotels or something and just have it, all you can drink! You know they do them now as package holidays. Like, I haven’t been sponsored by Wetherspoons but I read it.”
Suggesting he was intrigued by the inexpensive chain of pubs and hotels’ bargain alcohol deals, he said: “Instead of flying to Spain or whatever, you can pay, I think it’s like thirty quid, all you can drink for two days and you just stay in this hotel and just have it.”
But Ed admitted he was only joking about the Wetherspoons idea and shut down the possibility his famous friends would be celebrating his marriage in one of the pubs.
He admitted: “Imagine? I’m not going to go to a Wetherspoons Hotel. Sorry.”
