Christina Aguilera burst onto the pop scene back in the late 90s, and was scoring number one singles right off the bat. Generally speaking, most people remember her one of two ways – either the innocent, ‘girl next door’ look as seen in ‘What A Girl Wants’, or the aggressively sexual look as seen in the ‘Dirrrty’ video.
In both cases, Christina wore more than a little bit of make up. She’s never been shy about dolling herself up with vivid eyeliner and her trademark deep shades of lipstick, but now Christina Aguilera has joined the make-under trend, and as she approaches 40, she looks better than ever.
I’m sure you’ll agree that she is barely recognizable, in the best possible sense. This bare-faced photo shoot follows something of a trend that has been happening recently in the world of celebrity.
In the early stages of her career, Christina was often touted as a rival to Britney Spears, and both of the singers have gone through a number of physical transformations since they became household names
Following on from Demi Lovato’s revealing video for Vogue, Aguilera stripped bare for the cover of Paper Magazine. In a series of close-up shots titled Transformation, we discover that she actually has freckles, and beneath the bold, brash persona that she used to present to the world is a softer, younger-looking woman who many social media commenters agree looks even better!
“I’ve always been someone that obviously loves to experiment, loves theatrics, loves to create a story-line and play a character in a video or through stage,” she said in her interview with Paper. “I’m a performer, that’s who I am by nature. But I’m at the place, even musically, where it’s a liberating feeling to be able to strip it all back and appreciate who you are and your raw beauty.”
What Christina is saying makes a lot of sense. Christina started her pop career at a very young age, and after nearly 20 years, it must be nice to strip things back and show some appreciation for the natural look.
It’s fair to say that the social media reaction to the photo shoot has been overwhelmingly positive, with many people commenting how much younger she looks, and how.
However, as always there were also naysayers. Similar to the reactions after Lovato’s ‘make-under’, there are some people who have expressed skepticism with the ‘bare’ trend.
So what’s their beef? I mean, how ould you possibly have a problem with this? Well, a lot of people felt obliged to point out that the stars are still wearing some make-up, have undergone cosmetic surgery, and have the luxury of a team of beauty advisers around them.
Not everybody is convinced that these pampered celebrities going ‘natural’ does anything to inspire or empower other women to do the same. It is just a new standard of barely attainable beauty to aspire to.
Personally, I think this is nonsense, and I applaud Christina for her new look. Why can’t people be more supportive? It makes you feel better folks, trust me.
Whatever you think of it, you have to admit that Christina certainly pulls this look off, and it is refreshing to see a whole new side of her. Don’t be fooled though, the girl still loves her makeup. “I mean, I’m a girl that likes a beat face, let’s not get it twisted,” she laughs.
Whether or not Christina is going to stick with this all-natural look, it has certainly made for some really striking photos.
