If you were watching TV at any time in the ten years between 2001 and 2011, you can’t have avoided Smallville.
Billed as Superman, The Early Years, it told the story of how the man we all know as Superman, Clark Kent as a teenager in a small rural town.
He had all kinds of adventures, facing off against his future arch nemesis’, but also trying to maintain his secret identity and live a normal teenage life, having relationships and going to school.
A lot has happened in the 7 years since we last saw Smallville on our TV screens, and if you weren’t paying attention, maybe you didn’t know what the actors playing the main characters looked like these days!
Well, let’s find out together!
1. Chloe Sullivan – Played by Allison Mack
Since Smallville ended, Allison had a couple of minor roles in movies and in TV series’.
It’s pretty interesting to learn that along with her well-known character in Smallville, she also has previous experience in dealing with Superman! Mack actually provided the voiceover talent for Power Girl in the animated DC comics superhero movie featuring both Superman and Batman called Public Enemies.
You might also recognize her from the FX dark comedy Wilfred, although the role she remains best remembered for is Smallville, by quite a long way!
2. Lex Luthor – Played by Michael Rosenbaum
Since Smallville, Michael has voiced a variety of characters on the 2001 animated TV series Justice League, meaning he’s another actor from the series who has cartoon dealings with Superman! The most prominent character he played in the Justice League TV series was as Barry Allen, better known as the fastest man on Earth, The Flash!
Strangely, Rosenbaum has had many voiceover roles giving life to characters from the DC universe in cartoons and videogames. He also had a role in the sitcom Breaking In and made his directing and writing debut with the comedy movie Back in the Day in 2014!
3. Lana Lang – Played by Kristin Kreuk
Lana Lang was Clark Kent’s friend and teenage love interest in Smallville, and one of the few people who knew that Superman and Clark Kent are one and the same person.
Since playing the part of Lana in Smallville, Kristin Kreuk has been very active starring on her own TV show Beauty and the Beast since 2012, playing the role of Special Agent Catherine Chandler. She also has a role on a show called Chuck, in which the title character inadvertently downloads critical government secrets into his brain.
4. Pete Ross – Played by Sam Jones III
Despite appearing in 69 episode of Superman’s Early Years, Sam Jones hasn’t appeared in much that is all that recognizable since Smallville.
He did play a main character in the college comedy movie Blue Mountain State, but since 2012, he’s found his true calling, mentoring aspiring film students while helping them participate in Hollywood projects. Go Sam!
5. Clark Kent – Played by Tom Welling
Back in the day, Tom Welling was one of the most famous faces on our TV sets. Well, you would be if you played the teenage version of Superman as he was growing up!
These days Tom Welling spends most of his time behind the camera both directing and producing several episodes of both Smallville and a TV series called Hellcats. But on our screens, he was recently seen in Draft Day alongside Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner, and back on TV in Lucifer as Marcus Pierce alongside Tom Ellis playing the title character.
6. Martha Kent – Played by Annette O’Toole
Since playing Superman’s adoptive mother Martha Kent, actress Annette O’Toole has relaxed a little, but still keeps busy with plenty of roles on the small screen and the silver screen alike.
She has played a few small parts in TV shows such as Lie to Me, Grey’s Anatomy and playing Susan Emerson in Halt and Catch Fire. More recently she was the main star in the funny crime thriller Women Who Kill and will return to play a part in A Futile and Stupid Gesture later this year.
7. Lois Lane – Played by Erica Durance
One of the most famous and key roles in the Superman universe, the character of Lois Lane is synonymous with the actresses who have portrayed her, like Margot Kidder and Desperate Housewive’s Teri Hatcher.
Today Erica stars in her own show called Saving Hope and weirdly enough joins the cast members of Smallville returning to the DC universe, with a role in the Supergirl TV show!
8. Jonathan Kent – Played by John Schneider
Let’s face it, John Schneider was already something of a legend before he landed the role of Jonathan Kent, Superman’s adoptive father in the town of Smallville. I mean, he had already made a huge name for himself playing the lead part of Bo Duke next to Tom Wopat playing his cousin Luke Duke in the Dukes Of Hazzard back in the 80’s.
Schneider has had a long list of roles since Smallville, so where do we start? Most notably he has appeared in Nip/Tuck, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Desperate Housewives, and more recently The Haves and the Have Nots. He’s also got a stack of movies coming out in 2018… sheesh, busy guy!
