As we go into the new year, a lot of us have big ambitions about getting… well, smaller. This is no bad thing, and for those of us packing a few extra pounds it’s definitely the right thing to do.
Still, it can be easy to fall into traps or fad diets, or to get overwhelmed with the task ahead of us. Thankfully, the solution to steady weight loss is pretty straightforward. All it takes is to make a number of small changes to your daily routine – these small differences all add up!
Follow these tips and you’ll give yourself a much better chance of shedding the pounds, and most importantly, keeping them off.
1. Drink water regularly
We all know that drinking a good amount of water every day is a healthy habit to get into, but how much, and when? Well, apparently it’s best for you to drink 1-2 glasses of water 30 minutes before each meal. With this approach, your metabolism will have a fresh start, and your stomach will be partly filled, helping you to feel full without eating quite as much. This hydration regime could also help with your sweet tooth, and prevent you from raiding the fridge.
2. Pay attention to your food
Make eating a regular ritual. Take your time. Sit down at the table, don’t rush, don’t try to multitask, don’t think about problems, don’t watch TV, don’t talk on the phone. Just focus on your food. Be mindful of what you eat and how you do it.
This will help you to taste your food more clearly and eat much less. Eat as slowly as you can. Not only will this stop you from overeating – chewing is also very good for your digestive health.
3. Use a smaller plate and/or change your cutlery
This one is pretty simple, and might sound like common sense, but most people don’t think to do this. To avoid thinking too much about the size of your portion, take a smaller plate, and eat only the amount of food that it can hold.
Also, if you use chopsticks instead of a knife and fork, it slows down the eating process, which is very desirable because it ties into point number 3.
4. Get more sleep
Calling all sleepyheads moment! Not only does a good night’s sleep feel great, but it also has a great impact on good metabolism and keep the right hormone levels to help you stay fit and healthy.
While sleeping, your body is burning about 50 to 100 calories per hour. And you don’t even have to do anything but catch some Zs!
