15. The Jet Star Rollercoaster in Seaside Heights, New Jersey
The Jet Star Rollercoaster was left submerged in the Atlantic ocean after Superstorm Sandy hit in 2013. It remained there for months before finally being recovered.
16. The Salto Hotel in Colombia
The hotel opened in 1928 and gained popularity for it’s amazing views of a nearby 157 meter tall waterfall. It was abandoned in the 1990s but reclaimed and turned into a museum in 2012.
17. A church steeple pointing out of a frozen lake in Reschen, Italy.
I don’t know how this church became submerged beneath this lake, but the spire sticking out from a frozen wasteland is definitely haunting imagery.
18. The house of the Bulgarian Communist Party – Bulgaria
The home of the Bulgarian Communist Party was in use from 1981 to 1991 but was abandoned after the Soviet Union fell. The UFO shaped building has a really eerie feel to it still.
19. Abandoned military hospital in Beelitz, Germany
The Beelitz-Heilstätten was built in the 1800’s and helped Adolf Hitler recover from an injury from the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Most of the hospital was abandoned in 1995.
20. The last house on Holland Island in the USA.
This house used to be part of an island colony in Chesapeake Bay, but erosion ate away at the mud that formed the island, leaving this house as the last thing standing. It collapsed in 2010 as the land underneath it was eventually eroded too.
21. The New Bedford Orpheum in Massachusetts, USA
The theatre opened in 1912 and was closed down in 1959. It’s now functioning as a supermarket.
22. Shan Zhi Houses in Taiwan
These weird houses were built as a tourist destination for US military officers who returned from their positions in Asia. The site was plagued with terrible car accidents and lack of investors meant the place was shut down not long after it had been opened. The buildings were destroyed in 2010.
23. I.M. Cooling Tower, an old power station, Monceau, Belgium
This is an old cooling tower in an abandoned power station in Monceau, Belgium and it’s seriously creepy. The tower would have been used to introduce hot water into the structure which then produced a cooling effect as it would drip down. Think it’s creepy looking at the bottom of it? Try looking up!
24. An abandoned train station in Abkhazia, Georgia
This train station was abandoned during the Abkhazia War, which happened between 1992 and 1993.
25. Chateau Miranda in Celles, Belgium
This castle was built to hide aristocrats during the French Revolution and was used as an orphanage during World War II. After it’s abandonment in 1980, the family who owned the castle refused to let authorities care for it, leading to the abandoned state it’s in today.
26. Abandoned Subway Tunnel in Kiev, Ukraine
The abandoned subway tunnel is part of the metro in Kiev, where many of the tunnels remain flooded and full of hanging stalactites. How much would we have to pay you to venture down here alone?
27. Uninhabited Island, Southwest Florida
These alien looking dome structures were built in 1981 on Cape Romano.
28. An overgrown palace in Poland
This palace was built in 1910 for Polish royalty but was transformed by communist rule into an agricultural school. It also spent some time as a home for mentally handicapped children and adults before falling into disrepair after the fall of the USSR.
