When it comes to life threatening illness, nobody is immune. Even celebrities, who normally seem so untouchable, have to deal with serious diseases that can seriously hinder their otherwise perfect-seeming lives. These celebrities have spoken up about their own troubles with serious illnesses.
1. Lady Gaga
In 2010, Lady Gaga was diagnosed with borderline lupus, an autoimmune disease which causes the immune system to attack healthy tissue. She also suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and uses an infrared sauna to help alleviate the pain.
2. Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin suffers from Lyme disease, an infectious disease spread by tick bites. After getting bitten he suffered from flu-like symptoms every Summer for five years and thought he was going to die from the illness. Luckily, he didn’t, and he has since raised over $800,000 for Lyme disease research.
Pop icon Cher suffers with myalgic encephalomyelitis, more commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome. This means that she can sometimes struggle to perform everyday activities due to prolonged fatigue, and this is made worse with over exertion.
4. Michael J Fox
Michael J Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991. This is a degenerative disease which affects the central nervous system, causing shakes, slow movement and loss of balance. He was originally given ten years to live but after undergoing surgery to combat the symptoms of the disease, has defied all odds and is still alive today. He has raised over $700 million for Parkinson’s research.
5. Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez also suffers with lupus and has set up the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research in order to raise awareness of the illness and fund research into a cure.
6. Morgan Freeman
One of the worlds most well loved actors is no stranger to illness. He suffers from Fibromyalgia, which affects the muscles and soft tissue and causes serious pain and tenderness. He was also involved in a car accident 9 years ago which resulted in him losing all feeling in his left hand.
7. Toni Braxton
Toni Braxton suffers from pericarditis, which causes swelling in the membrane that surrounds the heart, causing chest pain. She was also diagnosed with lupus in 2010 and was hospitalised last year after overworking herself.
8. Frankie Muniz
Former Malcolm in the Middle star, Frankie Muniz, suffers from a serious illness that has been difficult for doctors to diagnose. He suffers from mini-strokes that vary in frequency and has also confessed to suffering from with severe memory loss. He’s forgotten most of his time as a child actor and carries around a journal so he can record everything that happens to him. This helps him to cope when he loses his memory.
9. Sarah Hyland
Sarah Hyland was born with kidney dysplasia, which means that a fetus’ kidneys don’t develop normally. She received a kidney transplant from her father in 2012 and continues to raise awareness about the illness.
10. Nick Cannon
Nick Cannon also suffers with lupus and and was diagnosed in 2012. He has been hospitalised twice due to this illness but has returned to work both times and continues to work to raise awareness about the disease.
The front woman of girlband TLC, T-Boz suffers from sickle cell anaemia, which often causes her to become sick whilst touring. In 2006 she had a huge non-cancerous tumour removed from her brain, which meant she had to learn to walk and talk again following surgery. She is now completely recovered from that and continues to perform with TLC.
12. Jack Osbourne
The son of Ozzy Osbourne, Jack was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, or MS, in 2012. He takes daily injections and eats a healthy diet to try to combat the illness and writes a blog about his experiences with MS.
13. Lil Wayne
Rapper Lil Wayne has epilepsy, a neurological disorder which causes seizures. He has been hospitalised multiple times but admits that he doesn’t follow medical recommendations that could ease his illness.
14. Nick Jonas
Former boyband member Nick Jonas was diagnoses with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 13. He carries an insulin pump at all times and has started his own non-profit organisation, Beyond Type 1, which raises awareness about the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
15. Bret Michaels
The lead singer of the band Poison had a brain haemorrhage in 2010 which lead to doctors also discovering that he has a hole in his heart. He also suffers from diabetes and has had an appendectomy.
