It’s hard to believe that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, has been dead for over eight years now. It feels like it was only yesterday when we fans were excitedly waiting for a new album or amazing new music video to come out. In honour of Michael Jackson’s great legacy, we’ve found 14 facts that even his biggest fans may not have known until now.
1. He composed the music for Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Composers who worked on Sonic The Hedgehog 3 have revealed that Michael Jackson had a hand in the composition of the game’s music. Sega have been denying these rumours for years but there’s no taking back the word of the composers now!
2. Michael Jackson broke the internet before it was cool
More over, Kim Kardashian, because you’re not the first person to break the internet. On the day Michael Jackson died, Wikipedia, AOL and Twitter all crashed at the exact same time, 3:15 PM.
3. He wore wigs
Following an incident where his hair caught fire while filming a Pepsi commercial in 1984, Jackson started to wear wigs. Rumour has it that he also had his hairline tattooed onto his head for the same reason.
4. He wanted to build a 50 foot robot of himself
The initial plans for Jackson’s 2005 comeback in Las Vegas included a 50 foot robot of the superstar, which was going to roam the Nevada desert. These plans were scrapped as Jackson struggled to find the funds needed to create it.
5. He didn’t return his library books
Over his lifetime, Jackson allegedly racked up $1 million worth of library fines. And we thought we were lazy with our deadlines!
6. He wanted to play Spider-man in a movie
When Marvel Comics filed for bankruptcy in the 90’s Jackson tried to buy the company so he could fulfil his dream of playing Spider-Man in a movie. Unfortunately for Michael, his plan didn’t work and Tobey Maguire became Hollywood’s first Spidey.
7. He also wanted to play Professor X in X-Men
When the X-Men films were originally announced, Michael Jackson desperately wanted to play the role of Professor X. The role eventually went to Patrick Stewart instead, and if we’re honest, we’re glad it did!
8. The Salvation Army had a huge part in creating the Thriller Video
All of the amazing costumes in the Thriller video were purchased from the Salvation Army.
9. He almost scrapped the Thriller video entirely
One of the greatest music videos of all time nearly didn’t make it after Jackson found out that Jehovah’s Witnesses opposed it. This lead to him adding a disclaimer to the beginning of the video which stated that Jackson in no way believed in the occult.
10. He made up the oxygen tank story
Yep, the whole thing about Jackson sleeping in an oxygen tank to prevent ageing was made up by the King of Pop himself and leaked to the press. No publicity is bad publicity, right?
11. He spent $1.5 million on an Oscar statuette
He bought the Best Picture Oscar that was awarded to David O. Selznick for Gone With The Wind back in 1999.
12. He claimed to have only had two plastic surgery operations
Jackson claimed that the only two cosmetic surgeries he ever had were on his nose and on his chin.
13. His Smooth Criminal boots were patented
Michael Jackson designed and patented the boots he wore that allowed him to do the gravity defying Smooth Criminal lean. And I always just thought he was a magician!
14. He almost collaborated with Whitney
There were three Michael Jackson projects that almost involved Whitney Houston. The first was ‘I Just Can’t Stop Loving You’, where Jackson wanted Whitney to sing Siedah Garrett’s lines. The second was Whitney’s hit tune ‘If I Told You That’, which was sang by George Michael instead. Finally, there was ‘Hold My Hand’ which was ended up as a duet between Michael Jackson and Akon.
