10 Times Stephen Hawking Proved Just How Funny He Was

Stephen Hawking was one most intelligent people that have ever lived, and although he sadly passed last week, his place is sceintific history books is assured.

Aside from his incredible discoveries and scientific theories, which will mean very little to the most of us, Hawking was also noteable for his incredible sense of humour.

In fact, this was something that kept the brilliant scientist going through the dark times in his life.

In a documentary ‘Stephen Hawking: A Brief History of Mine’ the scientist stated that humor will always have a major role in his life as it helped him to overcome the degenerative motor neuron disease that he has been diagnosed with in 1963.

“I have lived over 2/3 of my life with a thread of death hanging over me. Because every new day could be my last, I have developed a desire to make the most of each an every minute. Keeping an active mind has been vital to my survival. As has been maintaining a sense of humor.”

So, in that spirit, let us look back on some of the great demonstrations of how funny the great man was.

#1 When Stephen Hawking Met John Oliver

Due to the fact that most of his body was incapacitated, Stephen Hawking communicated through an electronic voice, powered by a system to fit his specific muscular needs.

Because of this, he requested questions ahead of time before interviews, so that he could prepare answers ahead of time.

Although Hawking was prepared for the questions, host John Oliver wasn’t perpared for the answers. He got SERVED.

#2 Stephen and Jim Carrey on Conan

Who would’ve put these two together? Well, I’m glad Conan did, because the results were incredible.

#3 Sheldon Meets Stephen Hawking- The Big Bang Theory

Mr Hawking appeared alongside Sheldon in an episode of popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory, and it became one of the highlights of the show. Sheldon ended up fainting when he realized that he had made a mathematical error in a piece of work he handed to professor Hawking. What a moment this was!

#4 The Time Stephen Hawking Organized A Time Traveller’s Party

There is nothing we need to add to this great clip. Just watch!

#5 Star Trek Stephen Hawking

In a memorable scene from Star Trek TNG,  Lieutenant Commander Data, an android crew member, is playing a simulation of a Poker game with the most famous Physics Scientists of our recent history, Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton.  And of course, Hawking is cracking jokes at the table!

#6 Homer Simpson Having A Beer With Stephen Hawking

You know you’ve made it as a pop culture icon when you appear as yourself in an episode of The Simpsons. He only appeared very briefly, but he made the whole episode.

#7 Stephen Hawking Does Stand Up Comedy

This is probably the best example of just how funny Stephen Hawking was. In this clip, we see his self-deprecating humor in full effect. What an incredible man!

#8 When Stephen met Jim

You saw the clip earlier in this article of Stephen Hawking appearing on Conan, on the phone to comedian Jim Carrey. But they did meet in person as well! And, of course, being a pair of jokers, they couldn’t resist goofing around for the cameras.

#9 The Time Stephen Hawking Shared His Thoughts On Brexit

Brexit, the buzzword for the UK’s exit from the European Union, has been a complicated issue since it was voted for in summer 2016.

In fact, it’s turned out to be so complicated, that Hawking remarked to the PM of Great Britain that he wasn’t going to able to help her with it, much to the amusement of the audience that had gathered to honour him. I guess Brexit is too complicated even for him!

10. That time he played quantum chess with Paul Rudd

Last but not least, enjoy this skit that Hawking did with comedy star Paul Rudd a few years ago. There’s also an appearance from another movie star or two…

So there you have it, folks. Stephen Hawking was not only a great scientific mind, he was damn funny, too.

Rest in peace, Professor Hawking. We will miss you terribly, even if if most of us were too dumb to understand your work.
