10 Foods You’ll Never Eat Again When You Learn How They’re Made

We all love our food, especially me! I know that if I go without food for slightly too long then I become some sort of fire breathing dragon until my stomach gets all of the food it wants. But do you ever stop to think where your favourite foods come from, or what they go through before they get to you? I know I didn’t, but now I do I have to share this crazy information with the world! So let’s take a look at how some of your favourite foods are really made.

1. Beer

Beer’s been around for so many years you wouldn’t think that there would be anything suspect about the brewing process. However, modern beers often contain an ingredient called Isinglass, which comes from a fish’s bladder! It’s used to make the beer clearer but has recently been removed from the ingredients list of Guinness, so maybe switch to the dark stuff if you’re not a fan of fish bladders!

2. Salad Dressing

Your salad dressing may look innocent but they can often contain titanium dioxide, which can also be found in sunscreen. Too much of this can make you very sick, so go easy on the dressing!

3. Jelly Beans

Ever heard of shellac? You may have used it to clean your car. Well this is what gives jelly beans their distinctive shine and is made out of bugs that live in the forest! No more candy for me, thanks!

4. Ready meals

A documentary made in the UK recently exposed that ready meals are often made in processing plants far from any farms. Some of the ingredients in ready meals have been frozen for years before being labelled as fresh and put back on the market.

5. Pringles

Although they’re classes as potato chips, Pringles aren’t actually made from potato. The way they’re processed actually destroys any nutritional qualities the ingredients may have had and can actually create a hazardous chemical called Acrylamide. Yikes!

6. Skittles

Skittles slogan, ‘taste the rainbow’, probably wasn’t counting on you finding out what makes up their red food colouring. It’s a colouring called carmine, which is made out of crushed bugs. Delightful!

7. Tinned Mushrooms

Mushrooms themselves are fine, but what might frighten you is the secret ingredient you may find in your tinned mushrooms – maggots! US Law permits there to be 20 maggots per 100 grams of drained mushrooms, which is wrong in every possible way.

8. Ice Cream

A few years ago, a grim secret was revealed about the flavouring in vanilla, strawberry and raspberry ice creams. They contain a natural flavouring called castorium, which sounds innocent enough but comes from a beaver’s butt! All of a sudden, ice cream is off the menu!

9. Marshmallows

Once upon a time marshmallows were made out of plants but nowadays they’re pretty much entirely made of gelatine. Although as long as I can toast them I can’t say I care all that much!

10. Packaged beef

It might look like beef and taste like beef, but one of the ingredients in packaged beef is basically a pink slime. It’s still used in some brands of packaged beef, so do your research before you buy!
